Busboys and Poets

Busboys and Poets is a groundbreaking hybrid of restaurant, bookstore, bar, and community arts venue that has been a cornerstone of the U Street and 14th Street corridor since founder Andy Shallal opened the original location in 2005. Named in honor of poet Langston Hughes, it embodies the notion that social justice, art, and great food belong together.

The flagship location features a full dining room, a curated independent bookstore, a full bar, and a stage hosting weekly live music, spoken word, open mics, and author readings. Events have included appearances by Angela Davis and Cornel West.
